Does Your Diet Affect Acne?

There are many factors that can contribute to acne. It can be something like a hereditary link to acne, or it can be as a result of poor hygiene. However, there is another cause to acne and it is your diet. What you eat can have a big effect on how your skin looks. The more junk food and fast food you eat, the more acne you may have.

There is a common belief that eating chocolate can cause acne but studies have shown this is false. Certain foods that have a high glycemic nature cause acne, including sugary foods and junk food, but chocolate has a low glycemic index. In fact, eating chocolate can cause a reduction in acne. This is because it increases serotonin levels to the brain, is high in antioxidants and can reduce stress.

There is a link between acne and partially skimmed milk according to several studies. As well, sherbet, cottage cheese, cream cheese and instant breakfast drinks can cause acne as well. This is believed to be caused by the hormones that are in milk causing a disruption of the hormones in the human body, recreating a puberty-like situation.

As was mentioned above, eating foods that are high in glycemic levels can cause acne breakouts. These foods include those that are high in carbohydrates like soft drinks, sweets and white bread.

If you don’t eat very many fruits or vegetables, you may also have a higher chance of an acne breakout. Studies have found that acne patients usually have lower levels of vitamin A in their system than those who are acne free. As well, severe acne sufferers often have much lower vitamin E levels in their blood. By eating fruits and vegetables on a regular basis, it is possible to reduce acne and therefore have healthier skin as a result.

In many ways, diet is the biggest factor in acne breakouts, with the exception of stress. If you eat a lot of fatty foods, fast food and junk food, then there is a good chance you will suffer from acne. By removing those items from your diet, you can then begin to live a healthier life and have healthy skin. The more fruits and vegetables you eat, the less junk food you ingest, will help you deal with your acne. It is also good for your body and for your weight to eat healthy, so throw away the junk food and grab an apple.
