Fly Fishing in California – Locations and Best Seasons to Fish

Fly fishing is an ancient form of angling, most renowned as a method for catching trout and salmon, but nowadays it is employed for a wide variety of species including bass, pike and carp, as well as many saltwater species. The preparatory process of fly tying and the intricate act of fly casting are something many people find amazingly enjoyable about fly fishing. It is a perfect combination of sports and leisure. Nothing is more relaxing and peaceful than a weekend spent fly fishing with family and friends. California Free Fishing Day:

In 2009, the Golden state offers two free fishing days: July 4 and September 7. On those days people will be able to fish on all freshwater and ocean waters in California without purchasing a fishing license. While many fishing enthusiasts already support the local fisheries by purchasing a yearly or day license, this is a great hands-on opportunity for those who have never tried fly fishing or bait fishing. It is also a perfect time to check out some of the excellent fisheries in the Golden state.

Fly fishing locations and best months to fish in California:

1. McCloud River, Fall River, and Hat Creek in Burney, CA
Fish species: Trout
Fishing season: April 25th – November 15

2. Owens River, San Joaquin River, Hot Creek in Mammoth Lakes , CA
Fish species: Trout
Fishing season: April 25th – November 15

3. American River, Roseville, CA
Fish species: Steelhead, trout, shad
Fishing season: January 1 – December 31 (Prime: November 1 – February 28)

4. Sacramento River, Redding, CA
Fish species: Steelhead, trout
Fishing season: Year Round

5. Eastern Sierra waters, Inyo and Mono Counties, California:
Crowley Lake, Big Pine and Baker Creeks, June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake, Rock Creek Lake
Fish species: rainbow trout, golden trout, brown trout, brook trout
Fishing season: April 25, 2009 and runs through November 15.

Other than the above there are also many spots in California that offer year round beach fishing.
