The saying, “You are what you eat” is true. The types of food we choose to consume everyday not only have an effect on our weight, but our moods as well. Foods can be the cause of depression, fatigue, and dangerous health issues. However, certain key foods that can be worked into your diet plan everyday will have a positive effect on your health, diet, and the way you feel.

Protein

Eggs can have a bad rep because their yokes contain cholesterol when in reality eggs are one of the best foods to eat as a source of protein. Eggs make you feel fuller and their protein can prevent any increase that may occur in blood sugar levels. If you don’t want to intake the extra cholesterol then only eat the egg whites.

Nuts are also a great source for protein. Although high in fat, studies have shown that more people who choose to snack on nuts tend to be slimmer and healthier. Consuming lean beef can also decrease appetite and hunger pains as well as help shed unwanted pounds. This was shown in a study conducted by the University of Illinois.

Spices

Spices such as ginger and cinnamon can help reduce and control insulin levels. By adding quarter of a teaspoon a day of cinnamon to your weight loss program you can lower your blood sugar and cholesterol. Ginger is a great spice to add to food of smaller portions because it will make your body feel fuller and more satisfied. Such small portioned meals would include soups, and stews.

Fruits

We have always known our bodies need a daily dose of fruits however some may be more beneficial than others. One of the best fruits you could intake daily are grapefruits. Grapefruit has been the subject of many weight loss studies and it has been shown that when consuming half a grapefruit before a meal the subject’s appetite reduced and they lost weight. This may be because grapefruit reduces insulin levels therefore the body is converting more calories into energy rather than fat.

Other fruits that are great for weight loss and mood are strawberries, avocados, and bananas. Strawberries are super low in calories and high in fiber. One cup of strawberries contains only 43 calories, and they are super yummy on top of it! Avocados tend to have positive effects on our moods and are a great source for vitamin B. Bananas are also a good source for quality vitamin B and are known to help people feel more relaxed. Studies have shown that people who suffer from depression have lower levels of vitamin B in their bodies, which is why avocados and bananas make us feel so great!

Liquids

There is no better way to quench your thirst than with a glass of water. Feeling tired is one of the most common symptoms of dehydration. When our bodies are properly hydrated we are able to think clearer, perform better, and stay focused.

Green tea is also great for our bodies, so skip the coffee in the morning and drink green tea instead. In addition to providing you with the usual morning caffeine you get from drinking coffee, green tea is filled with antioxidants that help boost your metabolism and can help lower your cholesterol.
