Omega 3 and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Most people have never heard of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, but they have heard of its more common name, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some simply refer to it as M.E. Regardless of what you call it, for those who suffer from this ailment, it can be very discouraging.

If you do not suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis you could be forgiven for thinking it is simple to cure by getting enough sleep. Ask anyone with M.E. about getting enough sleep and they will tell you that they can sleep for 23 hours of the day some days and wake up feeling just as exhausted.

What many non-suffers do not realize is the amount of pain most people with M.E. are in and how badly their cognitive functions are impaired. Making a cup of tea sounds easy, but when you have struggled down to the kitchen only to find you can’t remember how to make a cup of tea, if in fact you can remember what you came down for, is devastating.

Omega 3 fish oil may be the helping hand you are looking for in your struggle to function through each day. There is a great deal of evidence confirming that Omega 3 fish oil is of great benefit in reducing inflammation. This has been shown in medical trials with sufferers of Arthritis, Alzheimer’s and even ADHA (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome).

Let’s look at the symptoms in those cases. Arthritis causes pain in the joints ranging from mild to intolerable, Alzheimer’s reduces the cognitive functions resulting in memory loss and inability to perform simple mental tasks and ADHA results in inability to concentrate for periods of time. Does this all sound familiar to you?

It is no wonder that a diagnosis of M.E. can only be made when a myriad of other possible illnesses have been discounted. In all these cases, taking Omega 3 fish oils has been shown to benefit the patient. It reduces inflammation throughout the whole body, not just the joints and the muscles but also the brain.

One of the first things a doctor is likely to suggest for pain when you suffer from M.E. is Aspirin. When that doesn’t help you will most likely get a prescription for NSAIDs (non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs). One slight problem, especially if you suffer from M.E., is both of these are renowned for causing stomach problems. Omega 3 fish oil does not upset the stomach and may go a long way to relieving many of the symptoms of M.E.
