The Blind Side

‘The Blind Side’ is a real-life story that was ready-made for Hollywood. The film is adapted from Michael Lewis’s 2006 bestseller, ‘The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,’ which charts the remarkable path of Baltimore Raven offensive lineman Michael Oher from his teen years living on the streets to his arrival in the NFL. At 16, he crossed paths with the Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy Memphis couple who took him in and eventually adopted him.

A Serious Man

The always surprising Coen brothers have finally made a very serious movie with “A Serious Man.” It’s about God, man’s place in the world and the meaning of life, so naturally it’s one of their funnier movies. And because the year in question is 1967, the oracle of human wisdom and experience can be found in the lyrics of the immortal rock band Jefferson Airplane.

District 9

“District 9” was produced with about $ 30 million and shot on location in Chiawelo, Soweto, presenting fictional interviews, news footage, and video from surveillance cameras in a part-mock documentary style format. Released by TriStar Pictures, the film opened to critical acclaim on August 14, 2009, in North America and earned $ 37 million in its opening weekend. Many saw the film as a sleeper hit for its relatively unknown cast and low-budget production, while achieving success and popularity during its theatrical run.

The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker” is a great film, an intelligent film, a film shot clearly so that we know exactly who everybody is and where they are and what they’re doing and why. The camera work is at the service of the story. Bigelow knows that you can’t build suspense with shots lasting one or two seconds. And you can’t tell a story that way, either — not one that deals with the mystery of why a man like James seems to depend on risking his life.

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is a whole lot of movie. Some of it is undeniably flawed, starting with that stupid misspelled title, but most of it undeniably great. With Inglourious Basterd, he shows that there is a mature Tarantino, the one that has been emerging over Kill Bill 2 and Death Proof, still talkative but prone to longer sentences and drawn to more complex topics. He’s mostly emerged fully grown in Inglourious Basterds, leaving the finger-snapping cool behind.

Avatar

Avater takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, Avatar, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
