Sciatic Nerve Pain Cause and Some Treatments

The sciatic nerve which is also known as the ischiatic nerve is a large nerve that begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and down the lower limb. The sciatic supplies nearly the whole of the skin of the leg, the muscles of the back of the thigh, and those of the leg and foot. The sciatic nerve roots are found to be present throughout the whole nervous system. It is the longest and widest single nerve in the body. The inflammation in this nerve causes radiating pain starting from the lumbar area down to the buttocks and over the posterior side of the lower limbs. This sciatic nerve pain is termed as sciatica.

The disorders of the spine, especially those which occur in the lumbar area, result to the compression of the sciatic nerve which is considered to be the main cause of sciatica. Severe sciatic pain can make walking difficult if not impossible to walk. Sometimes the symptoms are aggravated by walking or bending at the waist and relieved by lying down. During pregnancy the extra weight and pressure on the spine can cause compression of the sciatic nerve. The pain will usually go away after childbirth. This pain can also be developed because of direct nerve compression from an outside force. This may be due to an injury in a car accident, resulting in a pinched nerve in the low back.

Sciatica can sometimes be resolved by undergoing simple physical therapy and avoiding the intake of medicine. The most common sciatic nerve pain treatment is bed rest this offers relief for bones and joints that are aching. Some physicians suggest sciatica physical therapy in the way of specific exercises, or some may simply suggest walking and to move about slowly this will loosen the muscle and reduce the pain slightly. In some patients this may not work out as a good treatment. Sciatic nerve pain treatment is prescribed by painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication, epidural injections, osteopathy or chiropractic. If the above explained treatment is not fond to resolve the underlying cause then the most significant treatment will be surgery.

The drug that is used for the sciatic nerve pain treatment is ibuprofen which is categorized as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen and in some causes that is very acute drugs like or codeine is used. Sometime the cortisone which is a steroid produced by the adrenal gland is injected in the epidural space found surrounding the spinal column. The cortisone which is injected is synthetically produced and acts as an anti inflammatory. A surgery called the laminectomy can be done in case of the bulging disc called the herniated discs.

The best and a very simple way to minimize the risk of pain, is to avoid sitting in awkward positions for long periods of time and regular exercise can also help to reduce the risk of Sciatic nerve pain.
