The Boomerang Effect

Whatever you throw out there comes flying back at you with a vengeance – so make sure what you send out to the world is what you want to be hit on the head with!

Negative thoughts, energy and emotion seem to be all you are experiencing? Blaming the world, external circumstance, the weather?

I hate to break it to you (well, I don’t, as the word hate is far too negative and not in my vocabulary any more) but all this negativity is YOUR doing!

You are creating it. It is your response to external circumstance – and no matter how shitty things might seem, you really aren’t making it any better by reacting in that way!

If you can see the beauty and wonder in the cold, in the rain, in the fact that you are stuck in traffic and get to sing along to the tunes on the radio for 10 extra minutes instead of being in that boring meeting, then your experience of the circumstances that you may prefer not to be experiencing will be all the better. The ultimate catch 22. Life goes in spirals – up or down – and it is your choice as to which way you go.

We’ve all noticed how strange it is that bad things seem to all come together – as do good things. It’s the spirals in action!

If you can transform your experience of the supposed bad things, then you can make them positive in some way or another, and that will lead to more positivity.

The Barefoot Doctor’s Urban Survival Guide has a wonderful way of putting it in the ‘I love doggy do on my shoe’ meditation. Now, I used to ‘hate’ treading in stinky dog poo, and I can’t say I would choose to do it, but if I ever do, or if something seemingly rubbish and annoying happens (which of course it does from time to time) I repeat the mantra to myself, and laugh at it! After all, it’s only pointless, annoying and rubbish. And the bad mood we can get ourselves into is often because we like having the excuse to have a moan. When we realise we actually quite like moaning, and realise we are actually enjoying the moaning, it has the weird effect of making you lighten up about it, and then you are no longer moaning and back to feeling OK!

Also, we judge what is good or bad, but in reality we really don’t know which way round things are. What we think it the most rubbish thing to happen may actually be the best learning experience we ever had, or protecting us from something way more rubbish, or simply giving us some contrast so we can fully appreciate the good stuff.

If we lose the judgement, accept things are they are, and try to learn, grow and take opportunities, then we can experience a far more positive life!

So, back to the boomerang effect! If you are putting out negativity, misery etc, then you are going to get that back.

Instead, if you give out radiance, love, energy, positivity and you will get it back. A nice thought over Christmas – give everyone you meet these positive gifts and watch your world light up, and watch the light spread!

This goes for yourself too. Give yourself acceptance, kindness, love. Give yourself these gifts and see how you respond positively. No more ‘I’m so fat / my fat ass’ comments – what you focus on expands after all! Instead focus on all the positive qualities you have, and how you want to experience even more of them. Focus on the moments where you feel great, and aim to get more of that into your life – even in the ‘doggy do on my shoe’ moments!
