The Importance of Spam Protection on a Blog

A blog is a personal free space, where you share your opinions and feelings with the world. Along with this personality sharing one of the most important things on a blog is of course the fact that random people throughout the world can comment on what you have to say in your personal space.

Along with these essentials there is another thing with a strong connection to blogs; spam. Now, what is this spam? Mainly it is unwanted comments, which are posted on your blog, with absolutely no relation to the general content on your blog.

Well, how bad can it be? Very bad. The reason for this is that spam does not come in one small package, but it comes in all the shapes and sizes your mind can possibly imagine and the amount is simply overwhelming. It is not just a few messages each day, maybe it is in the beginning, but as soon as your blog becomes a tiny bit well-known in the blogging world it is simply doomed without a proper spam filter.

But, what is so terrible about spam? The easy answer would be everything, which is also true, yet it does not sum it up in the right way. First of all you have to see it from the reader’s point of view, once they enter your blog and read one of your articles, they might think it is great and start reading the comments, which are usually following it. The problem appears when they do not see anything but irrelevant comments after they have read the article you have put your heart and soul into as a blogger. If the reader happens to click one of the links a spam message usually contains they might get thrown directly into a world of unwanted pop-ups and advertisements, which not only compromises the security of the reader’s computer, it also associates your blog with all the bad things those spam messages contain and lead to.

Comment spam also does one thing, which is ruining the whole purpose of a blog; it confuses search engines making your blog harder to find. If potential readers search for information you have on your blog, but your blog is filled with spam, these readers will never be able to find your blog. The reason for this is that, if search engines spot spam comments on your website it will categorize your blog in the wrong way making it harder to find for potential readers. This means your opinions and feelings might never be read even though you have made them accessible on the World Wide Web.

Ah, now I get it; spam is bad. But how do I protect my blog against it? There are several filters and plugins available on the market and it can be hard to find the right one.
